The father of montage experimented whole heartedly with his theory of "the montage of shocks" in this first full-length feature debut from him. A government- commissioned celebration of the unrealised Bolshevik Revolution, the film paved way for Eisenstein's next landmark effort: Battleship Potemkin which further honed his concept of montage. Though frankly, the notion of alternating short and seperate images to heighten tension and create excitement wasn't new but Eisenstein was the first person to fully understand its impact, using it majorly and giving it an official name: Montage.

Born to an architect father Eisenstein after completing his engineering joined the Red Army but later moved to theater working initially as a set decorator and later as a director. Drawing inspiration from D.W. Griffith, Eisenstein started work on his first feature introducing a new kind of film language, dubbed "montage". With the advent of sound he was later sent to Europe and US for research activities where he met his idols like Albert Einstein, Abel Gance, Charlie Chaplin, Walt Disney, and his hero, D.W. Griffith. Later, after returning to Russia he became a scholar at Moscow Film School. During this time he also made a couple of masterpieces and wrote a number of acclaimed essays..
