Being a black in America is tough and being a black filmmaker in America is even tougher. Though not a rare sight these days but in the 80's it was hard to come accross black filmmakers. Like all black kids, Lee was enamored by sports from an early age and during his teen years wanted to become a major-league baseball player. It wasn't until his degree course in mass communication that the filmmaking bug hit him. He later earned his degree in filmmaking from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. After idling around without any luck with film contracts for around two years, he was finally able to raise 1,25,000 dollars for his first feature 'She's Gotta Have It'. Shot in 15 days, the film is a stylish comedy about a black woman juggling between three boyfriends. The movie along with Jim Jarmusch's Stranger than Paradise ushered in a new era of American independent filmmaking in the mid 1980's nad won the critics' prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
