Evil Dead has got all the reasons for not making it to our list of "first films" because of its nominal storyline, hordes of overacting, too much of gore (the movie might seem a joke if you watch it now but not if you keep in mind that it was made in 86). However the positives far outweigh its negatives. Infact Evil Dead came out at a time when filmmakers had forgotten how to make horror films and is a remarkably kinetic film, full of the energy that only independent filmmakers can seem to muster, having more than its share of scares and chills.
Sam Raimi like most of the kids of 1960's grew up acting out his fantasies with the benefit of an 8 mm camera. Infact he made Evil Dead first on an 8mm movie camera as a short and then went about raising money from his friends, relatives and acquaintances signing an aggrement with them offering the share in profits. The gamble paid off and he was able to raise around 3 and a 1/2 lac dollars. He later on filmed the movie in his hometown Tenesse's woods on 16 mm taking along Joel Coen who worked as an editor on the film. Not your average sliced-up-teenager epic, Evil Dead was a marvelously wicked assault on the senses, belying its tiny budget with several extremely clever set pieces and is an important landmark in horror genre.
