Jean-Luc Godard was already a celebrity in France even before he directed his first motion picture. However the movie brought him to the notice of Europeans, and to an extent American audience. Godard rewrote the norms while breaking the so-called cinematic rules of narration and camera work. His first film which was shot without any script is a prime example of this. Inspired by the American gangster movies of the same time, which the director loved so dearly, "A Bout de Souffle" sparked off the low-budget on-the-fly independent fimmaking in French Cinema which we now know as the French New Wave.
Godard initially started work as a writer for Cahiers du Cinema, probably one of the most revered film magazine of all time, leaving it after a while to work on some short fims. His second stint at Cahiers four years later on was more fruitful where he forged a personal and career relationship with it and became one of the most inflential critics of French Cinema
